We sat through the opener, and then the most amazing thing happened. One of Tori's crew came down the isle in front of us and asked us if we'd like to sit in the front row. All six of us just stared at him like deer in headlights until I said, "YES!" He gave us the tickets, we hauled collective ass downstairs and saw Tori from the front left orchestra pit. Yep, THE FRONT ROW. We had a perfect view of her hands on her piano, and when she'd turn and play her organ she was looking straight at us. It was absolutely amazing and I was flooded with nostalgia for the first Tori show I saw with my fellow Vox blogger, Chemorox, in Kansas City at the Midland Theatre during the Under the Pink tour. We were fourth row, or so, and star-struck. Chemorox, last night it was as though you were standing right there with me. We absolutely must see Tori together up front and personal again! I went to a total of four shows with Chemorox, then took a long break from Tori concerting. Years later, another Vox Blogger, one half of The Harvey Girls, invited me to attend when Scarlet's Walk marched through Kansas City, again at the Midland. That show, and the company, completely reinvigorated my Tori concert going enthusiasm. By the time Chemorox and I went to our last show together, Tori had just added a band. (Previously she'd played concerts solo with her piano. From time to time she used a bit of pre-recorded orchestration, but not much.) I wasn't a big fan of the added band when they first appeared. Now, however, after years of refinement and honing their ensemble, the pack absolutely rocks. They know how to deliver a great show. I find that even folks who are not particularly fond of her albums wind up freaking out as to how good her music is if they attend one of her concerts. Why? Because Tori Amos is a musician. The live shows are a thing of their own, and Tori is, at heart, a live performer.
The setlist was all over the map. Songs from Little Earthquakes, Under the Pink, Boys For Pele, From the Choirgirl Hotel, To Venus and Back, and American Doll Posse. I don't believe she touched on Scarlet's Walk or The Beekeper once, though. I found a new, deeper appreciation for the song Spring Haze after last night. Can't get it out of my head. I think I'm gonna' go put it on right now.
I'm mulling over some writing on subject of Just What is it About Tori Amos? Coming soon. For now, Spring Haze and studies await.
So...if she's coming to your area, go. Just. Go. It's worth the time, money, energy. You'll be paid back tenfold.
GO.
I'm a bit worried that my brother, sister-in-law, and two friends' first Tori concert is going to be the American Doll Posse tour. She's playing different characters, costumes and all. Even "Tori" is a character. The music will still be incredible, but the spectacle may not be everyone's cup o' tea. Couldn't she just straddle the bench as usual? This video is poor quality, but the jam is awesome as it builds. Hopefully the substance will outweigh the style for my guests.
Larry keeps threatening to call out Kate Bush songs for her to play. No matter. I'll drown him out by screaming, "I looooove yoooou Tori!" I need the catharsis, desperately.
